Why do I need a survey?

Whether you are buying a narrowboat boat or you already own one it is important to understand its current condition. There can be underlying issues that need to be dealt with, even with brand-new boats, or you might be looking for an independent inspection before or after commissioning repairs or improvements.

We offer a range of professional inspections to suit your needs:

By commissioning your own survey from a professional surveyor it may help you:

  • Decide whether to purchase a vessel or whether is it better to walk away
  • Comply with your insurer’s requirements (for older boats)
  • Decide whether to keep your boat or sell it
  • Plan for future maintenance work
  • Avoid unplanned expenses and inconvenience

Surveys are carried out by our principal small craft marine surveyor, Graham Lane, AYDSA, DipMarSur (IIMS).

Graham is a qualified engineer, and small craft surveyor specialising in narrow boats and other steel inland waterways vessels.  He is affiliated with the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) and holds a Diploma in Marine Surveying (Yacht and Small Craft) issued by The International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS). Graham is a member of the Inland Waterways Group of both associations. As a liveaboard narrowboater, he understands the benefits and challenges of life afloat, which positively influences his surveying work and his relationship with clients.
